Syracuse-based Cafe Kubal to open first location outside Onondaga County

Auburn, N.Y. — Syracuse-based coffee roaster and retailer Cafe Kubal will open its seventh location this week, and it will be the first outside of Onondaga County.
The newest Kubal opens Saturday at 27 E. Genesee St. in downtown Auburn. It’s in a spot that most recently was home to Gretchen’s Confections and Cafe.
The cafe will serve its own roasted coffees, plus baked goods, sandwiches and wraps, with seating and takeout available.
“It’s our first venture outside the Syracuse area,” Kubal owner Matt Godard said. “It’s a great location, right in the center of town, in a real crossroads area.”
Cafe Kubal started in 2006 with a roastery and shop at 3501 James St., in Eastwood. Over the years, it has opened and closed several other locations.
The current lineup of shops includes the original Eastwood location plus the Deys Centennial Plaza building at 401 S. Salina St. in downtown Syracuse; the Creekwalk Commons at Water and Franklin streets (near the National Grid Building); 3911 Brewerton Road in North Syracuse; 208 North Townsend St. in the Hawley-Green neighborhood and 2218 East Colvin St. (behind the Tops plaza on Nottingham Road).
Godard plans to open another Kubal location in 2025 inside the Le Moyne College Firehouse at 1150 Salt Springs Road in Syracuse. It will be open to the public, not just Le Moyne students and staff.
