HISTORY:
IN 1866 THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA BEGAN MAKING NICKEL FIVE CENT COINS TO REPLACE THE SMALL, EASY-TO-LOSE HALF DIME.
THE FIRST TYPE WAS THE SHIELD NICKEL (1866-1883), WHICH WAS MADE TO A SLIGHTLY SMALLER DIAMETER THAN OUR MODERN NICKELS. IT HAD TWO
NOTABLE
VARIETIES: THE FIRST, WITH RAYS BETWEEN THE STARS (1866,67), AND THE SECOND, WITHOUT (1867-1883).
THE NEXT TYPE IS THE LIBERTY HEAD, WITHOUT THE WORD "CENTS" (1883), AND WITH IT (1883-1913).
THE FOLLOWING TYPE IS THE BUFFALO OR INDIAN HEAD NICKEL (1913-1938). ITS TWO VARIETIES
ARE "FIVE CENTS"
ON RAISED GROUND (1913), AND RECESSED "FIVE CENTS" (1913-1938).
THE NEXT KIND OF NICKEL IS THE JEFFERSON NICKEL (1938-2003). THIS KIND OF NICKEL IS BROKEN INTO TWO SEPARATE TYPES: THE REGULAR COPPER-NICKEL COMPOSITION (1938-1942, 1946-2003), AND THE WARTIME 35% SILVER COMPOSITION (1942-1945). DURING WORLD WAR II, NICKEL WAS NEEDED FOR THE WAR. SO, TO SAVE NICKEL FOR THE WAR, THE FIVE CENT COINS WERE CHANGED TO SILVER. TO INDICATE THE CHANGE, THE MINTMARK WAS MOVED TO A NEW LOCATION.
THE NEXT FOUR TYPES OF NICKELS ARE THE WESTWARD JOURNEY NICKELS (2004-2005). THESE NICKELS COMMEMORATE THE WESTWARD JOURNEY UNDERTAKEN BY THE "CORPS OF DISCOVERY" IN 1804. THERE ARE FOUR DESIGNS OF WESTWARD JOUNEY NICKELS, TWO FROM EACH YEAR.
THE LAST AND CURRENT TYPE OF NICKEL IS THE JEFFERSON MODIFIED NICKEL (2006 TO DATE).
