    A truly fine example of simbircite & pyrite in this exposed druzy cabochon.  The gold pyrite highlights the edge of the open surface in stunning fashion.
    Simbircite from the Russian Simbirsk along the Volga River is both a gemstone and a fossil.  These fossilized ammonites have formed over approx 160 million years.  Under the heat and pressure of the earth the chambers of the Ammonite Laberticeras have been replaced with a complex mix of iron, magnesium rich calcite, aragonite, pyrite, marl, chabazite and quartz.  The veins of pyrite were originally the 'bone' of the ammonite.
