HISTORY OF THE WESTWARD JOURNEY NICKELS
The US MINT began producing the WESTWARD JOURNEY Nickel series in 2004 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the exploration of the Western United States by LEWIS & CLARK in 1804. The first nickel produced was the 2004 PEACE MEDAL or HANDSHAKE NICKEL or LOUISIANA PURCHASE Nickel.  The KEELBOAT NICKEL or LEWIS & CLARK Nickel was the 2nd nickel in the series produced in 2004. The AMERICAN BISON or BUFFALO NICKEL is the 3rd coin in the series and has been very, very popular with collectors and the general public. The OCEAN IN VIEW NICKEL was released in August, 2005 and is the 4th coin in the series. The 2006 RETURN to MONTECELLO is the last coin in the WESTWARD JOURNEY nickel series. The 2004 & 2005 dated coins were limited to a 6 month mintage, are OBSOLETE TYPE COINS and
will never be produced again by the government
