2021 marks not only the 35th anniversary of the beloved American Silver Eagle series, but also the first time the original reverse design which has been used since 1986 will transition to a new reverse design later in the year. Early issues will feature John Mercanti's heraldic eagle reverse design. To keep up with customer demand and to tackle production delays related to the pandemic, the United States Mint decided to supplement bullion Silver Eagle production, which usually occurs at the West Point Mint, with the San Francisco Mint. Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) considers the San Francisco run "Emergency Production," and this coin is part of that historic run.

Striking Walking Liberty Design by Adolph Weinman
Obverse: The obverse design comes from Adolph Weinman's Walking Liberty Half Dollar, which was issued from 1916-1947. Liberty extends her right hand as though greeting the morning sun while carrying laurel and oak branches in her left arm. Her name, "LIBERTY," is joined by the national motto, "IN GOD WE TRUST," and the date, "2021," among the obverse inscriptions. Adolph Weinman was among the most important contributors to America's numismatic renaissance of the early 20th century. His best known contributions were the Walking Liberty Half Dollar and the Mercury Dime.
Reverse: On the reverse is an adaptation of the Great Seal of the United States that was designed by John Mercanti. Thirteen stars represent the original states above an eagle, which spreads its wings while protecting a union shield. The inscriptions "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "1 OZ. FINE SILVER," and "ONE DOLLAR" encircle the image along the rim. John Mercanti served as the twelfth US Mint Chief Engraver. In his nearly four decades with the institution, he designed more medals and coins than anyone else in its history.

Numismatic Guaranty Corporation (NGC) provided the grading information for this coin on a 1st Day label. That information includes a Mint State 70 grade and First Day of Issue certification. A Mint State 70 grade means that a coin appears perfect under 5x magnification, while the First Day of Issue designation is reserved for coins that were submitted for grading through an exclusive process. The certification label also relays that this coin was "Struck at the San Francisco Mint" and that is qualified for the "Emergency Production" pedigree.
