Since 1997, The Royal Mint has been manufacturing the Silver British Britannia. Containing 1 troy ounce of silver, these silver coins are given a face value of £2. In this collection, various sizes from 1997-2012 are available, going down to as little as 1/10 a troy ounce, which has a face value of 20p. Two new sizes were launched by the Royal Mint beginning in 2013: the 5 ounce Silver Britannia and a 1/20 troy ounce coin, with a face value of £ and 10p respectively.
The obverse features the most recent portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark and unveiled in 2015. Encircling Her Majesty’s portrait is the monetary denomination of the coin as well as the text “ELIZABETH II” and “D G REG F D” the latter of which is the abbreviation for the Latin phrase ‘Dei Gratia Regina’ meaning ‘By the Grace of God, Queen.’
A representation of Britannia, the goddess personification of Britain, is depicted on the reverse. She is portrayed standing tall against a strong wind, symbolizing the resilience of Britain in the face of hardship. The metal type, purity, and weight of the coin as well as the word "BRITANNIA" and the year of issue encircle the portrait of the goddess.
The Royal Mint produces silver coins with a fineness of .999 and a mass of 31.21 g from 2013 onwards. Coins struck before 2013 have a 40 mm diameter, which is significantly greater than the new silver Britannia's standard 38.61 mm.
