In 1791, the year before the establishment of the United States Mint, the British government produced 4000 of a proposed new one cent coin for this new nation.
They were hoping to secure a manufacturing deal for our nation's currency.
Washington objected to the idea of his portrait appearing on our nation's coinage.
The idea back then was to get away from the concept of monarchy.
